Lesson - Types and Antitypes in the Bible (Part 1) Mike Wencel Much of the material below was adapted from the House-to-House bookmark series relating to types and antitypes. (gladtidingspublishing.com)
TYPE: [NELSON] A figure, representation, or symbol of something to come, as an event in the Old Testament foreshadows another in the New Testament. ANTITYPE: A fulfillment or completion of an earlier truth revealed in the Bible. For example, the flood was a type, and baptism is an antitype.
A. TYPES OF CHRIST (PERSONS) A1. ADAM AS A TYPE OF CHRIST |
Adam (type) |
Christ (antitype) |
1 |
Adam's body was prepared |
Jesus’ Body was prepared |
Gen 2:7 ─ And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. |
Heb 10:5 ─ Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me”. |
2 |

Jesus is the image of the invisible God |
Gen 1:26 ─ Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness...” |
Heb 1:3 ─ Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, |
3 |
Adam was given dominion over all the earth |
Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and Earth |
Gen 1:28 ─ Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." |
Mat 28:18 ─ And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. |

Joh 19:34 ─ But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
Act 20:28 ─ …shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. |
5 |
Adam was made the head of the family |
Christ was made the head of the church |
Gen 3:16 ─ To the woman He said: …your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." |
Col 1:18 ─ And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Eph 5:23 ─ For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. |
6 |
Eve was the Bride of Adam |
The church is the Bride of Christ |
Gen 2:24 ─ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. |
Rev 21:2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. |
7 |
Adam's act caused sin to enter the world |
Jesus’ act of sacrifice can save the world |
Rom 5:12 ─ Just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned |
Rom 5:19 ─ For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. |
8 |
Adam's sin was from a tree |
Jesus bore our sins on a tree |
Gen 3:6 ─ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. |
1Pe 2:24 ─ who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
A2. NOAH AS A TYPE OF CHRIST |
Noah (type) |
Christ (antitype) |
1 |
His name means “rest” |
Jesus gives us rest |
Gen 5:29 ─ And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed."
Mat 11:28 ─ Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. |
2 |
He was righteous and walked with God even in a wicked world |
He was righteous among sinners and always walked with God |
Gen 6:5,8,9 ─ [5] Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually [8] But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord [9] Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.
Heb 7:26 ─ For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens
Joh 8:29 ─ And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him. |
3 |
He was a preacher of righteousness |
Jesus was a preacher of righteousness |
2Pe 2:5 ─ and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; |
Mat 4:17 ─ From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Mat 5:20 ─ For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 |
The water of the flood washed away the filth of the world, while the ark was the refuge and hiding place of Noah and his family |
The waters of baptism wash away the filth of the world by Christ's blood, and the church of Christ is the refuge and hiding place for Christians |
1Pe 3:21 ─ here is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, |
Rom 6:3-5 ─ Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
5 |
Noah was saved by obedient faith |
Jesus always exhibited obedient faith |
Heb 11:7 ─ By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Joh 6:38 ─ For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. |
6 |
The flood was foretold, but still came as a surprise to those who ignored the warnings |
Jesus' return has been foretold, but will come as a surprise to those who ignore the warnings |
2Pe 2:5 ─ did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;
Mat 24:37-39 ─ But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
A3. MELCHIZEDEK AS A TYPE OF CHRIST |
Melchizedek (type) |
Christ (antitype) |
1 |
His name means “King of righteousness ” |
Is the “King of righteousness” because he purchased us with his blood, providing righteousness for us |
Heb 7:1-2 ─ For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," … |
Heb 1:8 ─ But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom” Scepter: The official staff of a ruler, symbolizing his authority and power. Sometimes the symbolism of a scepter refers to the Messiah who will rule from Israel, from the tribe of Judah [Nelson’s] |
2
Was righteous among the heathen |
Was righteous among sinners |
Gen 14:18-20 ─ Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all. |
Heb 7:26 ─ For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; |

And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. |
4 |
Was a priest outside the tribe of Levi |
Is a priest outside the tribe of Levi |
Heb 7:5-6 ─ And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a command-ment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. |
Mat 1:2 ─ Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers (In this genealogy of Jesus, Levi is not in the list, but Judah is).
Heb 7:14 ─ For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood. |

6 |
He is a priest continually. |
Is high priest continually |
Heb 7:3 ─ without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. Gill: This is to be understood not of his person, but of his priesthood; that his father was not a priest, nor did his mother descend from any in that office; nor had he either a predecessor or a successor in it, as appears from any authentic accounts |
Heb 7:17 ─ For He testifies: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." Heb 7:28 ─ For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever. Barnes:The Messiah as a priest stood alone. His name does not appear in the line of priests. No one of his ancestors is mentioned as a priest; and as a priest he has no descendants - a standing unlike that of any other priest. |
