THERE IS A NAME I LOVE TO HEAR

Victor M. Eskew

INTRODUCTION

A.    When Mary was visited by the angel and told about the birth of her firstborn, His name was revealed to her (Luke 1:30-31).

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary:  for thou hast found favour with God.  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

B.      After learning of Mary’s pregnancy, Joseph was visited by an angel as well.  He, too, was told the name of the child who would be born to her (Matt. 1:20-21).

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife:  for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus:  for he shall save his people from their sins.

C.     Jesus.  This is the name of our Lord.

1.      Other terms are not His name:  Savior, Lord, and Christ.  They are titles and descriptive names of His work.

2.      The name given to him by His mother and father was Jesus.  It was this name that He heard often as his was growing up in Nazareth.

D.    This name is beautiful.

This name is valuable.

This name is powerful.

E.      This is the name that I love to hear.

1.      The title of our lesson is:  “There Is A Name I Love to Hear.”

2.      In this lesson, we will look at the times when I love to hear His name and why that is.

I.                   WHEN IN WORSHIP:  I see Him as Lord

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus when in worship.

1.      Worship involves man bowing down and paying homage to a superior.

2.      It is the sacrifice of praise.  It is the giving of honor and adoration to one who is worthy.

3.      I love to hear the name of Jesus in worship because He is worthy.

B.      At that time, I see Him as Lord.

1.      John 13:13

Ye call me Master and Lord:  and ye say well; for so I am.

2.      Definition:

a.      The word “Lord” means “the owner” or “the controller.”

b.      It signifies full control and authority.

c.       Jesus is sovereign, master, prince, and chief of all.

3.      According to Philippians 2:9-11, all of the creation should bow and confess His name.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name that is above every name:  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in the earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should  confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

a.      Not all will do this now.

b.      When the Lord comes again, they will.

c.       It is a privilege to be able to do it now with the understanding of who Jesus is.

II.                WHEN IN SIN:  I see Him as Savior

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus when I am in sin.

1.      It is not because Jesus and sin go together.  They do not.

2.      It is not because I am proud of my sin when I hear His name.

B.      When I am in my sin and hear His name, I view Him as my Savior.

1.      I know that He died for me (I Cor. 15:3)

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

2.      I know that His blood provides me with the forgiveness of sin (Rev. 1:5b).

...Unto him that love us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.

3.      I know that I can be washed and cleansed from my transgressions (I Cor. 6:11).

And such were some of you:  but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of God.

III.             WHEN ALONE:  I see Him as Friend

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus when I am alone.

1.      The world is not there for us.

2.      Even our friends and family cannot always be there for us.

3.      We sometimes find ourselves all alone.

B.      When I am alone, I see Jesus as my friend.

1.      He is the one who cares.

2.      He is the one who understands.

3.      He is the one who is there.

4.      He is the one who comforts.

5.      He is the one who advises.

6.      He is the one who keeps on loving me.

C.     Proverbs 18:24

…and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

IV.             WHEN BOWED IN PRAYER:  I see Him as a High Priest

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus when I am bowed in prayer.

1.      The world mocks those who pray.  They see it as a place of weakness.

2.      The child of God magnifies prayer.  He sees it as a place of strength.

a.      We can praise our heavenly Father.

b.      We can ask to be cleansed of sin.

c.       We can find strength to do battle.

d.      We can open up the treasures of heaven for our disposal.

B.      When I bow in prayer, I love to hear the name of Jesus because it reminds me that He is serving in the position of High Priest.

1.      Hebrews 4:14-16

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.  For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

2.      Jesus mediates for me.

Jesus intercedes for me.

Jesus advocates on my behalf.

V.                WHEN IN DEATH:  I see Him as the Resurrection

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus in death.

1.      Death impacts us in two ways.

a.      It takes away our friends and love ones.

b.      Ultimately, it will take us from this earth (Heb. 9:27).

And as it is appointed unto men once to die…

2.      Death is a formidable opponent.

Death is a constant opponent.

Death is a victorious opponent.

B.      I love to hear the name of Jesus at death because He is the resurrection and the life.

1.      He acknowledged this during His earthly ministry (John 11:25).

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life:  he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.

2.      Following His death on Calvary, He proved He is the resurrection and the life (I Cor. 15:4b).

…and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

3.      His resurrection assures me that I, too, will be raised to life in the day of resurrection when the Lord returns (I Cor. 15:22-23).

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.  But every man in his own order:  Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are his at his coming.

a.      The grave cannot hold my parents.

b.      The grave cannot hold anyone who has died before me.

c.       The grave cannot hold me.

VI.             WHEN BEFORE ENEMIES:  I see Him as the Conqueror

A.    I love to hear the name of Jesus when I am before my enemies.

1.      Christians will always have those who hate them and oppose them.

2.      I John 3:13

Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

B.      When I stand in the presence of my enemies, I love to hear the name of Jesus because He is the Conqueror.

1.      We noted earlier that Jesus is Lord.  He is sovereign.  He is over all.

2.      There is not a power on earth that is able to destroy the Lord and the hosts of heaven.

a.      Revelation 6:2

And I saw, and behold a white horse:  and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him:  and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

b.      Revelation 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

c.       Revelation 17:14

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them:  for he is Lord of lords and King of kings…

CONCLUSION

A.    There is a name I love to hear.  I love to hear the name of Jesus.

1.      I love to hear it when in worship because He is Lord.

2.      I love to hear it when in sin because He is the Savior.

3.      I love to hear it when in loneliness because He is my friend.

4.      I love to hear it when in prayer because he is a High Priest.

5.      I love to hear it when in death because He is the resurrection and the life.

6.      I love to hear it when before enemies because He is the conqueror.

B.      Jesus’ name indicates all there is about Him.  In conversion, His name is vital.

1.      One believes in His name (Rom. 10:9-10).

2.      One confesses His name (Rom. 10:9-10)

3.      One is baptized into His name (Acts 2:38)
