Postmodernism

I.              Introduction

a.    Postmodernism is a mindset made up of these concepts:

                                          i.    All truth is relative to the individual

                                        ii.    An opposition to rationalism

                                       iii.    Experience trumps fact

II.            America is affected

a.    Survey of the American Public

                                          i.    66% of Americans believe there is no absolute truth

                                        ii.    A study of college students showed 95% of college students agree

b.    Proverbs 14:12, 16:25

                                          i.    Solomon says it twice to emphasize his point

                                        ii.    Many do what they believe it right based upon their conscience

1.    Our conscience must be trained (Acts 23:1)

c.    Judges 17:6, 21:25

1.    America is facing a time period as they did

2.    Everyone does what they feel is right

d.    This nation would be blessed again if God is her Lord (Psalm 33:12)

                                          i.    We listen to God’s standard because He created this world (33:4-8)

                                        ii.    Hosea 4:1-6 shows what a nation becomes without Truth

1.    Stealing, murder, adultery, etc

2.    They are destroyed for lack of knowledge (v6)

e.    The Church is affected

                                          i.    Preaching – 1 Thess 2:4-5, 2 Tim 4:2-4

1.    Preachers teach fluff and what people want to hear

                                        ii.    Lord’s Supper – Acts 20:7

1.    People take the Lord’s supper at weddings and special events

                                       iii.    Music – Malachi 1:13, Col 2:23

1.    Soloists, praise teams, clapping, and more have become normal

2.    People are bored with church (Mal 1:13)

3.    People start their own worship (Col 2:23)

                                       iv.    Abortion  - Jeremiah 1:5

1.    People allow others to choose without opposition

2.    Same is true of homosexuality (Jude 1:7)

III.           Conclusion

a.    Hosea 6:1-3a

                                          i.    Hosea says we need to “return unto the Lord” and that all will be well if we “follow on to know the Lord”

                                        ii.    We must return to knowing the Truth and allowing it to make us free (John 17:17)
