How People Respond To The Gospel (Four Kinds of Hearts)

Michael Roberts

INTRODUCTION

Why do we need the Gospel?

Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:1-2; John 8:21, Rom 3:22-24, Col 1:14)

The only way we can have our sins forgiven is by hearing and obeying the gospel of Christ.

We have redemption and forgiveness of sins by hearing and obeying the gospel of Christ

The message this morning is about how people respond to the gospel.

For the message on this morning, will reflect and meditate on the Parable of the Sower.

You can find yourself in the Parable of the Sower.

What is the Gospel?

The joyous good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.  Thee Greek word translated as “gospel” means “a reward for bringing good news” or simply “good news.”  The gospel is not a new plan of salvation; it is the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation that was begun in Israel, was completed in Jesus Christ, and is made known by the church.  The gospel is the saving work of God in His Son Jesus Christ and a call to faith in Him (Rom. 1:16-17).  Jesus is more than a messenger of the gospel; He is the gospel.  The good news of God was present in His life, teaching, and atoning death (Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary)

Sin Separates us from God: Isaiah 59:1-2

Hear the Gospel: Rom 10:8-17

Believe the Gospel: Mark 16:16, Heb. 11:6, Rom. 5:1-2

Repent of our sins: Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38, Acts 17:30

Confess Jesus: Matt. 10:32, Rom 10:9-10

Be Baptized: Matt 28:18-19, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, Rom 6:3-5, Gal 3:26-27, Eph. 4:5, Col. 2:12

1 Cor 15:2 - 1 Cor 15:4 (KJV)
1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Hear God’s Word

Rom 10:13 - Rom 10:17 (KJV)
13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God

Believe In Jesus Christ

Mark 16:15 - Mark 16:16 (KJV)
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Heb 11:6 (KJV)
6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Repent, turn away from all past sins

Luke 13:2 - Luke 13:3 (KJV)
3I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Acts 17:30 (KJV)
30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Confess faith in Christ

Matt 10:32 - Matt 10:33 (KJV)
32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Rom 10:10 (KJV)
10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Be baptized into Christ for the remission of sins

Mark 16:15 - Mark 16:16 (KJV)
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:37 - Acts 2:38 (KJV)38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Parable

A parable is a brief story that makes a comparison.  It typically uses an illustration from everyday life to bring out a spiritual truth.

A parable is a story which illustrates some spiritual truth.

A parable conveys spiritual truth through a series of earthly comparisons.

There are 39 Parables of Jesus Christ recorded in the New Testament.

For the message on this morning, will reflect and meditate on the Parable of the Sower.

The Parable of the sower

Matthew 13:1-9, 13:18-23; Mark 4:2-9, 4:14-20; Luke 8:4-8, 8:9-15.

·        The “Parable of the Sower” is recorded in the New Testament in 3 of the 4 gospel books.

·        In Palestine, the farmer would first scatter the seed.  Then the ox and plow would come and cover the seed.  Jesus used this situation to show how God’s words are accepted in people’s hearts.  In today’s world, many seeds fall among thorny weeds.  God’s message today is becoming choked by worries, riches, and pleasures of this life.  Some Christians who used to bear fruit have stopped.  They have become entangled in the search for money, success, and pleasure.

·        Jesus used this parable to show how different people react or respond to the gospel.

·        The four soils represent four kinds of people who hear the gospel.

·        This story tells about different kinds of hearers.

·        We should make sure our hearts are ready to receive the Word of God (Matt. 13:1-23)

·        Jesus had already talked about thee importance of bearing fruit (Mt. 7:15; 12:33)

·        Jesus explains the purpose of the parables (Matt 13:10, Mark 10:13, 8:10)

·        Jesus explanation was given only to the disciples.

·        Jesus interpreted this parable Himself.

·        Matt 4:2 “he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine”

The sower

Mark 4:14 “The sower soweth the word.”

The sower is the gospel evangelist

The sower is Christ working through His disciples to spread the gospel throughout the world.

The seed (the word of the kingdom)

First, we must understand what the “seed” represents.

Luke 8:11 “The seed is the word of God.”

The word of God tells us how to be saved and how to live the Christian life.  You were shown in the word what to do to be saved.  The Bible also shows you how to live as a Christian.  When you believe and obey (Mat 7:21, Acts 5:32, Heb. 5:9), the “seed” is growing within you to produce good fruit.  How you react to the word shows the kind of soil you are.

( 1 ) The Seed Fell by the way side

Matthew 13:4, 13:19 (Mark 4:4, 4:15; Luke 8:5, 8:12)

a.     Unresponsive people who fail to respond to the seed or word (gospel) sown, so Satan quickly removes it lest they be saved (Luke 8:12)

b.     These are people who hear the word but do not respond with true faith (Luke 8:12).  If you have become a Christian, this soil does not describe you.

c.      Seed that fell by the way side was exposed.

d.     Path trampled through the field.  Packed hard and the seed found not root

e.     Here there was no response at all to the gospel

f.       Path to the field.  Path packed hard.  Seed found no root.

g.     Satan easily takes the Word away from hard hearts.  Hard hearts do not respond.

1 Cor 1:18 (KJV)
18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

( 2 ) The Seed Fell upon stony places

Matthew 13:5, 13:20-21 (Mark 4:5, 4:16-17; Luke 8:6, 8:13)

a.     Impulsive people.  Immediately receive the gospel, but do not count the cost.

b.     Some people receive the word with joy (they are really excited at the time), but after believing for a while they fall way (Luke 8:13).  Jesus saith, “These have not root.”  They do not become firmly established.  He said this would happen “in time of temptation.”

c.      They have no root (spiritual reality)

d.     Shallow soil often lay on top of a layer of rock.

e.     Rocky ledge; Thin or shallow layer of soil.

f.       Young plants could not get enough water.

g.     Changing the heart is important (Matt. 4:17; 11:20; 15:19)

h.     When trouble comes because of the Gospel, some go back to the old ways.  (Matt. 12:43-45; Heb. 6:1-6)

Matt. 5:8

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

Matt 15:8 - Matt 15:9 (KJV)
8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Psa 119:10 - Psa 119:11 (KJV)
11    Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psa 119:105 - Psa 119:105 (KJV)
105    Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

2 Tim 3:15 - 2 Tim 3:17 (KJV)
15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Tim 2:14 - 2 Tim 2:15 (KJV)
15Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

( 3 ) The Seed Fell among thorns

Matthew 13:7, 13:22 (Mark 4:7, 4:18-19; Luke 8:7, 8:14)

a.     Preoccupied people.  Unplowed and unprepared soil.

b.     Three things would choke the word.  These “cares, riches, and pleasures” may not be sinful things, but simply things that demand so much attention from us that we neglect spiritual things.  Consider too that one might continued to attend worship with the church but still not be bearing fruit as Jesus expects.

c.      This points to the need for proper balance in life.  You have obligations with school, a job, family, etc.  These obligations must not be neglected.  But none of these things should be allowed to become so important to you that you neglect your spiritual life (Read Luke 10:38-42; II Timothy 3:4; Luke 14:18-20; I Timothy 6:9-10.

d.     Weeds seem to grow faster than good seed.

e.     Weeds rob the good seed of food and water.

f.       Some hearts still love the world.

g.     Worldly riches are desired more than heavenly riches (Matt. 6:19-21)

h.     A heart that loves the world does not produce fruit for God because he worries about things that pagans seek (Matt. 6:24-34)

2 Cor 6:14 - 2 Cor 6:18 (KJV)
14Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

James 4:4 - James 4:10 (KJV)
4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

( 3 ) The Seed Fell among thorns

1 John 2:15 - 1 John 2:17 (KJV)
15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 Cor 6:11 - 1 Cor 6:12 (KJV)
12All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Heb 6:1 - Heb 6:6 (KJV)
1Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3And this will we do, if God permit.
4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Heb 12:2 - Heb 12:2 (KJV)
1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Rom 12:2 - Rom 12:2 (KJV)
1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

( 4 ) Seed Fell into good ground

Matthew 13:8, 13:23 (Mark 4:8, 4:20; Luke 8:8, 8:15)

a.     These are the good and honest hearts who “keep” the word and “bring forth fruit (Luke 8:15).

b.     These are they which keep the word “with patience”.  This means they never give up; they never quit.

c.      Well-plowed and prepared soil.

d.     When people’s hearts are true to Jesus, trouble does not make them leave their faith in Christ.

e.     They put God and His kingdom first (Matt. 6:31-34).

f.       This kind of life produces good fruit.

Eph 2:8 - Eph 2:10 (KJV)
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Gal 6:9 - Gal 6:10 (KJV)
9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Heb  6:10 (KJV)
10For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

1 Thess 1:8 - 1 Thess 1:10 (KJV)
8For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Cor 3:5 - 1 Cor 3:9 (KJV)
6I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
8Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
9For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

( 4 ) Seed Fell into good ground

1 Cor 9:16 - 1 Cor 9:18 (KJV)
16For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
17For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
18What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

Rom 2:6 - Rom 2:10 (KJV)
6Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

1 Cor 15:58 (KJV)
58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Rev 14:13 (KJV)
13And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Gal 1:6 - Gal 1:12 (KJV)
6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
10For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
11But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Rom 10:13 - Rom 10:17 (KJV)

14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 Cor 1:17 - 1 Cor 1:18 (KJV)
17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

1 Cor 9:14 - 1 Cor 9:18 (KJV)
14Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
15But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

1 Cor 15:2 - 1 Cor 15:4 (KJV)
1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

2 Cor 4:3 - 2 Cor 4:5 (KJV)
3But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
5For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

2 Cor 10:3 - 2 Cor 10:5 (KJV)
4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Gal 3:6 - Gal 3:9 (KJV)
6Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Eph 1:12 - Eph 1:13 (KJV)
13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Eph 6:11 - Eph 6:15 (KJV)
11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places
13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Col 1:3 - Col 1:6 (KJV)
3We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
4Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
5For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
6Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

1 Thess 1:5 - 1 Thess 1:10 (KJV)
5For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
7So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Thess 2:2 - 1 Thess 2:14 (KJV)
1For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:
2But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.
3For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:
4But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
5For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness:
6Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.
7But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:
8So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.
9For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
10Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:
11As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
12That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
13For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
14For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

2 Thess 2:7 - 2 Thess 2:14 (KJV)
7For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Tim 1:6 - 2 Tim 1:12 (KJV)
6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
8Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Heb 4:2 - Heb 4:6 (KJV)
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
5And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
6Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

Heb 5:5 - Heb 5:14 (KJV)
5So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
7Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
10Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

James 1:22 - James 1:25 (KJV)
22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

1 Pet 1:22 - 1 Pet 1:25 (KJV)
22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

2 Pet 2:20 - 2 Pet 2:22 (KJV)
20For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Rev 14:5 - Rev 14:6 (KJV)
6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
