Seeing Double
by: Dalton Gilreath

I remember the fourth grade all too well as it was the year I had to get glasses. Whether I wanted it or not, I quickly adopted the nickname, “Four-eyes”. While it may not seem like a good memory it does remind us of the four-eyed creature God created, called the Anablep. While this fish doesn’t really have four eyes it does have four pupils. Its eyes are divided in half from top to bottom so that it can see things above the water and below the water at the same time. One could rightly say that this creature sees double.

As Christians we may not have four pupils but we can and must see double. Of course, this isn’t in reference to physical sight but spiritual. We must spiritually see above us and below us at the same time. That is, we must look above to Christ (Heb 12:1-2). As we run this race we look up and remember why we fight this fight. We are reminder of who we serve and what He did for us. At the same time, we are vigilant to look below (1 Peter 5:8). Satan, our adversary, is always trying to hinder us as we run. He constantly puts obstacles in our way in order to trip us up on our Christian path. Friends, we are misinformed if we believe we can make it to the end faithfully without watching Satan. But at the same time, if I spend too much time focusing below and not above I may lose sight of the goal. We must be careful to always be aware of our surroundings so that we may stay on the right path. That being said, are you seeing double?
